If the tularemia organism has been genetically altered to greater pathogenecity as in some reports I have read, it can be deadly. I practiced in East Texas, and I do not recall any colleague reporting a case of tularemia. Garden variety tularemia will make a person very, very sick.

Ulceroglandular Tularemia, the worst form of the disease, carries a 5% mortalitiy rate. That coupled with tularemia pneumonia raises the mortality rate to about 30%.
