These findings alone do not lead to the confirmation of avian influenza virus infection (including highly pathogenic AI virus H5N1, that is, the virus strain circulating in Asia), in particular because the finding of antibodies in ducks cannot be considered as a rare event and could be due to prior infection with low pathogenic AI, while the ducks' deaths could be due to diseases other than AI. -------------------------------------- Samples from the dead ducks are also being tested for the detection of avian influenza virus (virus isolation test on embryonated eggs: highly pathogenic AI should kill the chicken embryos in 3-4 days) at the Romanian laboratory. After 4 days, as of Sun 9 Oct 2005, this test has not given any positive result so far; however, a "2nd passage" in eggs is now being performed. --------------------------------------- In relation to these findings, the Romanian authorities have undertaken strong actions, including the stamping-out of all poultry in the farm in which the ducks died and in several other backyard/family type farms in the surrounding, rigorous controls at the border of the "restricted zone" established around the suspected farm, disinfection, etc. ----------------------------------- Samples from some poultry and dead wild swans have been taken on Saturday [8 Oct 2005] in the village concerned and its surroundings and have been sent to the laboratory in Bucharest for testing. -------------------------------------- During the weekend [8-9 Oct 2005], the Romanian veterinary authorities have remained in close contact with the European Commission's services and asked for technical support and laboratory reagents. ---------------------------------------- A community expert team made of Jorgen Westergaard, former highly experienced Commission official (Deputy Head of Unit in SANCO E2), Ruth Manvell, from the Community Reference Laboratory for AI, Weybridge, UK, and Guus Koch, from the National Reference Laboratory for AI in the Netherlands is arriving in Bucharest today, 10 Oct 2005, bringing all necessary laboratory reagents requested by Romania. ------------------------------------------ It is expected that, by Wed 12 Oct 2005, the ongoing laboratory tests should confirm or exclude with a high degree of certainty the occurrence of AI; further tests indicating whether the virus is highly pathogenic or not and for the final characterization of the virus type would take 2 days more. ------------------------------------------- The European Commission will review the situation once these test results are received and will act immediately in accordance with the results. ______________________________________________________________ Turkey On Sun 9 Oct 2005, the European Commission's services have been informed of an outbreak of AI in an open-air turkey farm with 1800 turkeys, 1700 of which died after the 1st clinical signs were detected on 1 Oct 2005. Israel constitutes a real danger to the region and the Islamic states,
head of the Council of Guardians, Ahmad Janati, told worshippers at
Friday prayers.

He criticized some countries endeavors to establish relations with
Israel saying "Establishing relations with Israel will strengthen it to
suppress and blackmail states and peoples of the region." Janati
reiterated Iran's right to peaceful use of nuclear energy within the
framework of Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT)decisions,
stressing that it will not give up this right and will not surrender to
pressure.

IRNA reported him saying "We are not frightened of the probable
sanction on nuclear issue since it cannot hurt Iran." The Ayatollah
added,"We do not welcome sanction, but if it is going to be imposed
on us, we never surrender to it." Ayatollah Jannati said," The Islamic
Republic of Iran, in the light of sanctions, so far, have achieved
progress and have made inventions in aerial, military and missile
industries as well as building dams and silos." He added the US and
Europe talk about observation of international laws and regulations,
while they are themselves ignoring.

NEW YORK -- Mayor Michael Bloomberg and police officials questioned
reports on Tuesday that an alleged subway bomb plot that spread fear
through the city was a hoax.

"I don't know that it was confirmed that it was a hoax at all,"
Bloomberg said when asked about the reports by a cable news network and the
New York Post, which is owned by News Corp., the parent company of
FOXNews.com.

The reports, citing unnamed sources, claimed an informant in Iraq who
had told U.S. authorities about the possible threat by Al Qaeda later
admitted he made it up.

The informant's allegation prompted city and FBI officials last week to
issue a dire public warning and to flood the subway system with
thousands of extra police officers.

After four days of high alert, the officials announced Monday there was
no clear evidence an attack would be carried out and scaled back the
protection.

Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly, appearing with Bloomberg at a
hospital groundbreaking in Harlem, said the informant could not have recanted
because U.S. authorities in Iraq had lost track of him.

"As far as we know right now, the source is not in custody," he said.

Bloomberg said the informant had passed a lie detector test at the time
he identified three suspects in Iraq, and alleged they were plotting to
use other operatives in New York to attack the subway with briefcases
and baby carriages packed with explosives. Officials have also said the
informant had provided reliable information in the past.

Kelly said he participated in an interagency conference call on
Thursday before issuing the public warning, and during the meeting he learned
that one of the alleged plotters had indicated it was "too late" to
prevent the attack.

"Certainly it was a factor," Kelly said. "We had to make a decision
quickly."

The mayor continued to insist the city didn't overreact.

"When somebody makes an allegation, and it looks like there is some
credibility -- and clearly there was credibility here -- you go and you
act on it," he said.

A call to the FBI's New York office was not immediately returned.

Suppose there was a reported bioterrorism attack involving _F. tularensis_ or _B. anthracis_. Thousands of samples would be again taken by emergency services personnel. Are _B. anthracis_ or _F. tularensis_ present as background organisms? Glitch forces fix to cockpit doors

For more than two years, U.S. airplane passengers have flown more
securely because high-tech cockpit doors created a barrier to prevent a
repeat of 9/11, when terrorists entered the cockpit and commandeered
four planes. But, the doors were not foolproof. In December 2003, a
Northwest Airlines maintenance mechanic inside an Airbus A330 jet on
the ground in Minneapolis pushed the microphone button to talk into his
handheld radio. Though he hadn't touched the cockpit door, he heard the
sound of its lock operating.
