The terrorists were described as unemployed chemists who had recently taken a six-week explosive training course in Afghanistan.

The al Qaeda snitches also told U.S. officials that they planned to travel to New York, by way of Syria, with bogus passports.

Once here, they would meet up with 19 operatives who had already been sent to New York to help set off the bombs, the sources said.

The bombs would either be hidden in baby carriages or planted in briefcases similar to those used in this summer's London bus and train bombings.

Bloomberg said the FBI notified the city of the threat in recent days.

NBC News agreed Tuesday to withhold reporting about the plot in order to allow the investigation to proceed.

But Homeland Security Department officials downplayed the threat.

Department spokesman Russ Knocke refused to explain why it was discrediting the tip — or to comment on whether it had originated with the al Qaeda operatives arrested in Iraq.

An official who was briefed on the plot said the threat was considered doubtful because it did not reflect "detailed, pre-surveillance," but information that could be found on the Internet.

Regional FBI Director Mark Mershon, who appeared with Bloomberg and Kelly at a news conference, said that "classified operatives" had "partially disrupted this threat" and added that "multiple individuals are involved."

NYPD Closes Parts of Penn Station for Suspicious Package & More on Yesterday's Threat Report (updated)

Penn Station partially shut down after Amtrak found a suspicious package near the ticket counter - MSNBC reports that 7th Avenue entrance still open but north side of Amtrak platform closed - Fox News reports that entrance at 33rd & 8th closed and portion of concourse above tracks closed and NYPD press conference at 11 am - CNN reports officials in hazmat suits now there - possibly a liquid substance - but Amtrak still boarding passengers.

Yesterday's Threat Report: Fox News also reports that DHS is still dubious about yesterday's threat announcement, but the suspect who was source of threat apparently passed a lie detector test. ABC News reports that the threat source "has identified at least one of the attackers by name and claims that the man already is in the United States" and "one of two Iraq insurgents who were sources for the threat information said when arrested, reportedly in perfect English: 'You f—-ing can't stop us now; it's too late.'"

Yes, I noted that the scientists had taken the training and were coming here, something there that we are not quite getting, unless I am thinking of the missing scientists that left Pakistan and Russia.

We know that OBL hired russian scientists for $2,000. a month.

We know that Kadafa of Libia hired Pakistan scientists.

Some are said to be in North Korea.

Many of the russians came here and russia still has them on retainer, I read it was $125. per month, to make reports back to russia on what they were working on.

If these are scientists coming here to meet the 19 terrorists, it lets in the thought, that they will be the ones to arm a nuke, a machinest can build it, but it requires special knowledge to arm it.

Then there are the bio-weapons.

I still think of our traveling jihadi's and all the Chinese scientists that were being arrested, as they came in from Mexico.

Boy, that is a cast of characters, you could write a thriller with all of them.
