The Threat Matrix

The title refers to a daily report given to the president of the United States detailing the most serious terrorist threats against the country. To tackle those threats, the government has formed a top-notch task force to infiltrate the terror cells and cut off the danger.

"Every morning, the president receives a list of the top ten terrorist threats - this list is known as the threat matrix."

We here at FR are trying to be in conjunction with the daily reports around the world that involve threats. We try to provide a storehouse of information that takes hours of research.

Home grown Islamists may hit US: FBI chief
Full Story

WASHINGTON -- The United States could be attacked by "home grown" Islamist terror groups, the FBI's chief has warned.

FBI Director Robert Mueller told the London Financial Times newspaper in an interview published Thursday that the United States could face attacks from "home-grown terrorism" very similar to the July 7 bombings in London that killed 52 people and wounded another 700, Mueller said.

When asked if the United States could face such attacks from "home-grown groups", Mueller answered emphatically: "Absolutely, it could," the Financial Times said.

Re: weather

Typical autumn around here. Was cold and rainy yesterday - miserable. Today is chilly but at least it's not raining, and the sun is out.

It's cold enough at nights that I've put my winter gear in the car. Was in the mid-30s night before last. Yesterday morning going over the mountain the rain was mixing with snow.

Looks to be a hard winter headed this way. I'm hoping for LOTS of snow. We didn't get much last year so the wells/aquifers weren't recharged properly. Most intermittent streams and springs are dry.

Good work granny - the article does look like it has good information in it. I can't verify his count of the number of devices and the total amounts of radioactive sources missing, but the rest of it all sounds about like what I'd expect given the possible situations he gives with the amount of radiation released in each case.

The article is written for the scientifically inclined layperson, which means that it's neither as technical as a true scientific journal article would be nor as non-technical as a typical newspaper article would be - perhaps at about the level of a Scientific American article. If you haven't had at least a couple of university level science courses (or at least not recently) I can see how it might be rough going.

One term that he never defines is a "curie." This is a measure of radioactivity, named after Marie Curie who was a physicist who studied radioactivity. A highly radioactive source will emit more radiation than one that's not highly radioactive. This in turn relates to how fast the radioactive source decays - if it decays quickly it emits more radiation than if it doesn't decay quickly. The scientific term for this is half-life - a longer half life means that the material will be around longer but it doesn't emit as much radioactivity.

Think of the "half-life" as being much like temperature - it measures how "hot" something is. In the case of a half-life, lower numbers are "hotter." In turn a "curie" measures how much radioactive "energy" is there, and will be the product of the "temperature" times the amount of material present - much like a "calorie" when you're talking about chemical energy. A Curie though is a LOT of radiation, it's a much "bigger" unit than a calorie, at least in terms of what you might encounter under normal conditions.

Hope that helps.

I wonder is the dry-runs are still happening.

I'm thinking that the NYC and Baltimore subway / tunnel threats were deliberate misinformation. Part of their strategy is to deluge us with so many false threats that we stop paying attention to them - the boy who cried wolf syndrome.

It is a good read.

IMHO, if the terrorists are going to try to take down the planes with cookies....we're ready. :-)

DALLAS
Man Arrested For Sprinkling Fecal Matter On Pastries

A Dallas cab driver is in big trouble for getting caught on tape sprinkling dried feces on pastries.

49-year-old Behrouz Nahidmobarekeh is on trial for allegedly throwing fecal matter on pastries at a Fiesta grocery store.

Police said they found a pile of human feces by his bed.

He would dry it, either by microwave or just letting it sit out and grate it up with a cheese grater and then sprinkle it at the store, officials said.

Neither attorneys in the case is clear about a motive or why the defendant would resort to something so repulsive.

Prosecutors will show a surveillance videotape of the defendant, which shows him sprinkling a substance on the food.

The FBI arrested Nahidmobarekeh but turned the case over to local prosecutors after they determined it was not a national security issue.

I agree.
I was just reading additional news stories.

There were complaints to the store about foul smelling pastries for 7 months.

Thank you for the additional info, I couldn't read the page with my eyes, some do that to me, and it would not copy, so had to kinda spot check it.

I hoped it would be of interest to the people who are learning, as I am past the learning to run from nuclear.

When I went to school, we did not have science classes, or I quit before they were part of the program.

The Baghdad Attack: The Real Targets Not
journalists, says Zarqawi (Time supports the
Terrorists!)
Time ^ | Oct. 26, 2005 | CHRISTOPHER ALLBRITTON

Posted on 10/26/2005 10:19:58 AM PDT by jmc1969

Monday's deadly attack on Baghdad's Palestine Hotel, a large,
well-coordinated assault claimed by al-Qaeda involving truck bombs
which killed at least six people, was thought to target the many
foreign journalists who stay there. But sources inside the Iraqi
insurgency tell TIME that the real target was a security firm based in
the hotel.

The raid was a joint operation between al-Qaeda in Iraq, the
organization headed by Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, and Jaysh
al-Muhammad, one of the largest Ba'athist groups. Al-Qaeda claims
Iraqis from a suicide group called the Lions of Bara'a bin Malik drove
the actual vehicle bombs. In a statement, al-Qaeda claimed the attack
went after "the intelligence agencies, American, Australian and British
security companies and the thieves of the treasures of Iraq," referring
to contractors. The insurgents believe the targeted security firm is
actually a Western or Israeli government intelligence agency.
