why would the mods ban trolls, or selectively ban trolls, at all? It seems like great sport to me.

There are many theories on that topic. The first holds that, since the purpose of FR as stated by its founder is other than providing great sport for the VKS and RKBA, allowing more than a token Troll count distracts from the mission.

Another cites the extreme danger inherent in encouraging Viking Kitten weapon development. The consequences of a Kitten-Troll arms race are too terrible to contemplate. So, the Mods strike down the more vacuous Trolls to avoid rousing the Kittens to create plasma weapons.

The theory that I personally subscribe to is that the Mods want to strike a balance between the daily work advancing the agenda and the absolute laugh-out-loud enjoyment of Troll tormenting. An imbalance creates either little gray FReepers who drone endlessly on CREVO threads, or heavily armed reactionaries who live for ozone. It's a better forum for the balance, IMHO.
