That happens....there was an earthen dam failure out in...montana....nevada....can't remember the name... a big one....but search it up if anyone here remembers it...the pics are stunning.
What was so stunning about the Canyon Lake wasn't a failure of the dam - but the spillway "doing what it was supposed to do".
I supposed though without the spillway it would have been much worse.
