I think wheels are starting to turn that haven't moved before; the current thinking seems to me to be running the line of still blocking close access to Florida's beaches, but opening up the rest of the Gulf. While that isn't ideal, I would hope that the camel's nose under the tent would result in enough economic benefit to Florida that full development would eventually be possible.
But if gasoline were to spike to the prices Forbes suggested yesterday ($7 a gallon), then I would guess that Floridians would be willing to open everything. In fact, were they to reach such outré levels, I think that there would probably be a strong public push during such a peak to open up all available sources.
Max Mayfield on now saying storm surge is still a danger. Also says the storm is still dangerous, and people shouldn't try to return to Houston or Galveston yet.
There's a word for women like that.
BTW, notice the big storms this year all had female names?

I like Max Mayfield. He is very patient, but I sense he gets annoyed with some of the questions and hype.

If you look at life that way, then Canada would have to start charging you a "hefty surcharge" for all the natural gas, timber and electricity our government agreed to send you. It's not as if you actually NEED any of it. I've lived in the States as well, and you have your own trees and are certainly capable of generating you own electricity. You can drill for natural gas too. You'll find it not far from any of your coal mines.
This is what happens when we put up walls and don't share the earth's resources with once another. I believe proponents of this ideology are said to have a "scarcity mentality."
There are enough natural resources on this planet for all of us, even with triple the present population - if we could only find a way to get along with one another.
Natural disasters like Katrina and Rita are the least of our problems. FWIW - Jesse.

No word on tornado warnings here, but the shear radar was quiet last time I checked. Still quiet. I'musing the Houiston feed which has a range gate essentially at the LA border. Not sure what's up east of there.
Bead lightnong is a form of ball lightning. When a stroke weakens at the end I believe that internal emag forces make small sections of it ball up. The linear stroke dissolves into a string of beads. It crackles when it does that, consistent with regular ball lightning which often explodes when it disappears. Many small explosions at close range equals "crackle".
Thats what I saw and heard. Best guess between 1000 and 2000 feet away.

I'll pull down some DEMs and do an analysis. I have yet to see the SRTM dataset wrong. It's hard for a dirt ball to fool a radar. Look me up when you retrun and I'll hook you up with whatever I have by then.

Great...my hubby is still in NO with the NG, but he's armed too..
Just woke up... From your post am assuming the Galveston and Houston both are OK....Who received the most damage?
Breached levees, flooding, looters with AK-47's... Feels like deja-vu all over again. Sigh.
All of NOLA is stuck on stupid.
BTW, reports earlier indicated that the London Canal breach in New Orleans had failed again, water coming in underneath. That's a very tough fix while water is flowing fast. You need a barge to pound in sheet pilings to stop it. If you don't stop it, it undermines anything you try to sit on top.
If it doesn't get closed, then New Orleans will flood to the same levels it did after Katrina.
All that said, they have a better shot at stopping it this time, the flow is slower and they don't have the rest of the Katrina worries this time around Feds already in place, etc., but it's still something to watch.
