What you are referring to is historically correct, but somewhat misleading. In the past, the nobility and upper classes generally married for power and alliances rather than love. There was never any pretense of the man and woman loving each other, it was truly a marriage of convenience to consolidate or keep power and produce an heir.

While none of this makes the flagrant adultery right, it does put it in perspective. Remember in these cases, there WAS NO BETRAYAL OF TRUST. From what we can observe, these situations describe the Klintoons perfectly.
