WASHINGTON (AP) -- Federal disaster grants to state and local governments should be conditioned on how they accommodate pets in their evacuation plans, say lawmakers disturbed that some Hurricane Katrina victims refused to leave home because they couldn't take their animals with them.

"I cannot help but wonder how many more people could have been saved had they been able to take their pets," Rep. Tom Lantos, D-California, said Thursday.

Gimme a break - they're animals. Animals! If one person is not evac'd or properly cared for because disaster relief agencies we're tied up caring for kitty cats, I hope there's massive lawsuits. If one person dies because of it, well...

I hope you are right that it is left to the local officials. I love my dog and have zero problem with them saving as many animals as possible given the situation. A one size fits all federal mandate designed mostly to grab headlines seems like a real bad way to hadle things.

Stay well.

"It's big pets that cause the most problems, particularly those that bite and/or poop all over the landscape."....

Sounds like you're descibing the Superdome! ;>)

I can just see this plan working with the unPC Rotty or Pit Bull being whisked aboard a public bus.

LOL! I have two toddlers in diapers. I think if I were stuck somewhere without a supply of diapers (and wipes, and plastic bags for disposal), I'd just kill myself. I plan to store extra boxes in the attic before winter, just in case!

Rotty or Pit Bull being whisked aboard a public bus.

Exactly what I was thinking. My nextdoor neighbors have two Rottweilers. Those things are BIG, and the amount of waste they produce, and the barking, yoiks! If people were bringing large dogs into emergency shelters, I think the authorities would have to provide tranquilizer shots.

I'm sorry for pets that were left behind and suffered after the hurricane, but owners have to be responsible, just as parents do.

Well, I like to think I wouldn't have ended up in a situation dependent on authorities either.

Bob, we're dealing with emotions here, not hardcore facts of reality. Snoball deserves the front seat of the Evac. bus.

Fabulous idea.

Bullshit. A dog or cat or ferret is property and the logistics of this are stunning. Can you imagine the chaos. How about people take responsibility for their pets?
