I was in school one morning, after a weekend of 707's landing all night, over us. It was monday, about 11am, when the school PA announced we were going home. Go to your bus, now.
Arriving at home, my mom had packed a suitcase for each of us. We loaded onto cattle cars around 2pm, and we left Gitmo, aboard the USNS Upshur, before dark. That was October 22, 1962. The families living on the Leeward side were air evac'ed, while most of the others left on the seaborn transport, or an old LST.
We arrived in Norfolk on a cold rainy day, in shorts, and t-shirts. We lived.
People who don't have any better sense than to trust in gum't, deserves what they get... Military wives ain't gum't. They know better than to ask. They do!
