"I'm not sure that he would have,"
Yes, he would have.
He massed troops on the border of Saudi Arabia in 1990, and said that he was intent on reclaiming the land that 'all' of the land the oil fields that 'belonged' to Iraq sat on.
And he did advance into Saudi Arabia.
You forgot your history, didn't you.
Then the Saudis should have been ready for him, especially after Kuwait. Why should we worry about the Saudis, especially since they seem to be the breeding ground for all these terrorists? Why not let them kill each other?
In fact ragheads killing each other seems like a marvelous thing to me. Kinda like watching the Nazis and Russian Commies fight...you hope they both lose.
And so we went to war in order to protect one of the prime financial centers for terrorism against us. Not a terribly swift move on our part, if you ask me.
By the way, what was Saddam going to do if he got a hold of the oil fields? Not sell us oil? He'd have hurt himself worse than us by doing that. Oil was his revenue. If anything, he probably would have tried to undercut OPEC. But even if he did try to pull some stunt like you seem to be suggesting, we have reserves of our own, not to mention other untapped sources of energy (such as nuclear) as well as the capability to get by with on less energy if we had to. We'd have done (and could still do) ourselves a favor by getting us unhooked from dependency on Middle Eastern oil.
