Here in Fla. we learned a few things about hurricanes. First thing: Re-elect Jeb! 2nd thing, make sure all important papers and family pics are in plastic containers and ready to roll. Make a thermos of coffee in advance in case there is no power, fill the tub and washer with water just in case needed and have batteries, tarps for the roof, gas in the car, bug spray, keep shoes on in case of broken glass and you have to walk anywhere, and stay away from big trees. Do not park your vehicle near a big tree if you can help it. They can fall even after the storm from the weight of the water. My neighbors heated bath water in the sun in a giant new trash can and used a gas grill on the porch. Plastic milk containers filled with water and frozen in advance make for good ice later.
Thank you for the tips - I live in Tornado Alley so I've kept pictures in zip lock bags for years! I live in a new subdivision so fortunately (normally we say unfortunately) we don't have large trees yet......... I have a gas grill - the jugs of ice are a good idea - I'm thinking of consolidating all freezer items into the garage freezer in the almost certain event we lose power......... they will stay frozen longer due to the freezer being full, and if they go bad at least it won't be inside the house............
