This is also my greatest fear, but FWIW, Schröder and the co-leader of the Linkspartei, Oskar Lafontaine, hate each others guts, since Oskar is an ex-SPD leader (and candidate for Chancellor if memory serves) who bolted the party and allied his new WASG party with the eastern communists.
