But stuff like racism there is little tolerance for. If one good ass-whuppin' won't cure the kid, then I wouldn't want to let his poison infect anyone else.
Realize that now. Was explained to me it was the shirt underneath. Shirts like what he was wearing (the shirt underneath) give Southerners a bad name
He'll change his mind. Voluntarily.
I'd consider it. And I'm white.
So you find one song from twelve years ago, and make the connection that this is somehow a common or popular theme in rap music. And out of curiosity, how much Ice Cube do you actually listen to?
Fine, then he might get off with a slap on the wrist from the judge. We really are talking a lot here without knowing the case. Was the white kid (hehe, I accidentally typoed 'shite' instead of 'white', and 'shite' is, um, 'excrement' in Britain, and appropriate) a known racist and troublemaker? The article seems to say he defended his shirt with more racist remarks. What were those remarks? Was the black kid a known troublemaker and maybe racist himself? All of this goes into how it should be handled.
If I was in charge at Dixie Outfitters, I'd offer something in the way of educating the young man. My sincere hope is that he will grow up to be a thoughtful citizen. Not all PC and groveling and spineless but have respect for folks H.K. Edgerton keeping in mind that the tee shirt could have easily referred to him.
When I was stationed in Germany back in the 1980's, there was a black soldier (a friend of mine, BTW) who had displayed books in his barracks room from black authors about blacks rising up and such as well as posters on his wall about saving the "black family". He also owned only black themed shirts and hats. At the same time, there was an initiative to remove all offensive displays from the barracks- with us being linguists, there were quite a few foreign flags on our walls to show off what languages were spoken, and they all had to come down. Did my friend's items get identified as needing to go? Not a chance. I didn't mind, but I'll never forget the double standard about what is considered offensive.
--see my other post with the rap lyrics from a famous TV star.
have you considered the notion that said cars were stolen?
:)
In other words, he wanted you to help him destroy unit cohesion by championing his personal idiosyncracies - idiosyncracies that he was unable to defend by himself?
Did he join the USMC to be babysat?
So the kid must have known the shirt would get him in trouble so he sneaked it on campus. This means the provocation was deliberate.
Thanks for pointing that out. I missed that somehow.
I like school uniforms.
it really doesn't matter what the reasons were- he should not have been assaulted.
Why is it so hard to understand that what you are doing is hurting the assaulter by allowing him to think it's ok? How does this help him?
Another note: you are saying the black kid couldn't be "expected" to show restraint, right? Is it because he's black?
roger that!
Yep.
How 'bout Point Lookout? Johnsons Island? Elmira? Castle Williams? Fort Lafayette? Fort Warren? Fort McHenry? Rock Island? Benton Barracks? Camp Morton? Camp Chase? Chase? Camp Randall? Camp Douglas? or Camp Butler?
The Confederacy lacked food and medicine thanks to union blockades and war against civilians, they were even willing to pay Lincoln in gold for medicine, and to simply release prisioners without exchange. The offers were refused. What was the Union excuse for all the Confederate POW deaths?
Of course not. The assaultee could have pressed charges. If he was really stubborn it might even have gone to trial. And when it went to trial, the defendant would be acquitted.
Basically, yeah. He just thought it wasn't right that those guys could beat the hell out of him just becauase he had racist crud on this wall. My CO and I disabused him of that notion.
And driven for years without arrest? ;o)
Can I just point out that the swastika is a 5000 year old symbol of luck. They are all over India and prominently displayed on most religious sites and people's houses.
Would anyone care to argue that Indians and others should be allowed to display swatikas when they are in the West? Afterall, 5000 years as a symbol of luck shouldn't be spoiled by 13 years of racism after being missapropriated by a group of bad apples, should it?
This wasn't just racist...this was advocating killing people.
No, the white punk provoked the fight.
