The Dims have painted themselves into a corner. They can't win back any of the votes they lost if they insist on continuing on "obstruction",and if they don't they will lose the $$$ backers.

Sorry Tator, but I do not agree. The RATS strategy is simple. Roberts replaces Rheinquist so he gets a pass. The fight will be over who replaces O'Connor. So why should the RATS shoot the proverbial load now?
They want another Souter to replace O'Connor. Bush is not going to give it to them. If the RATS fight now, the perception will be that no Republican chosen nominee for the court is good enough, which them gives what you say credence.
Bush will nominate someone equal to Roberts, use Roberts strategy and they will let the RATS try to Bork him. The Republicans are trying to paint the LIbs into a corner by trying to have Roberts come off as too conservative. Using that strategy, the Republicans can them put up a Luttig or Brown.

I think the Dem's are clueless on this one. If they vote for him now they will have to face the wrath of their own special interests e.g. ACLU, NOW, etc... for backing him. They will also have a pretty tough time turning someone comparable down for O'Connor's seat. If they don't vote for him, they will have a pretty tough time explaining why.
