Revised Sept. 11 Panel Report Released
AP ^ | 9/13/5 | LESLIE MILLER

WASHINGTON (AP) --

A new version of the Sept. 11 commission's report on the four hijacked flights was released Tuesday with recently declassified information about terrorist threats and holes in airport security before the attacks.

At the request of the Sept. 11 commissioners, the Bush administration declassified much, but not all, of the material it had blacked out before turning the report over to the National Archives in January.

The new version provides fresh details on the repeated warnings about al-Qaida and its desire to attack airlines in the months before Sept. 11, 2001.

For example, on page 61 a previously classified section shows that the Federal Aviation Administration's intelligence unit received "nearly 200 pieces of threat-related information daily from U.S. intelligence agencies, particularly the FBI, CIA, and State Department."

Also unclassified was the conclusion that the domestic aviation system had, since 1996, "operated at a security level that was, in effect, a permanent code orange."

The new report revealed that the civil aviation system was under under "Aviation Security Alert Level III" on Sept. 11, which meant that screeners were supposed to hand wand or pat down suspicious passengers — but only those who had checked their baggage.

Other details about security gaps before the attacks were also disclosed in the revised report. It described, for example, a report for the FAA in 2001 that showed "both carry-on and metal detection screening performance has declined significantly from 1999-2000."

Airport security has been tightened since then.

"What happened to the new announcements about Able Danger that were supposed to be released this week?"

Don't know, but it seems like Able Danger is one congressman and maybe 5 or 6 people in the government/defense establishment against everyone else in the government and the defense establishment and the Media. Yeah, the Able Danger group has the truth, but that may not be enough.

Don't know what to do about it.

"Did you think the 9/11 Commission was just going to let that come out without a proper misdirection put in place for the media to conveniently be distracted by?"

Sorry to say you are correct. Discouraging.

"corrupt Democrats and their naive and amoral agenda"

The real agenda is that of the organized hard left (OHL)---anything but naive. They want to destroy America. Only the followers are naive.

re: "When are the hearings on Able Danger in the House and Senate?"

They're supposed to start today actually... 9-14-2005 That's what I have entered on my home calendar..

Sen. Specter is supposed to be the chairman. Perhaps Katrina bumped it off the list?

Don't look for a blow by blow deep analysis from the folks in the brand new 'CNN Situation Room' though. Before or after the hearings...

There's nothing but couple of screwballs over there playing around on Google Earth, and acting like their on top of things.... Hell, they can't even get a weather report out there to a distressed city when they really need it..

We at FR are on our own, but not alone.....

Proud, smart, and armed with an endless pile of information...

Protected by the first amendment, and the second amendment and located right here in the best country on earth..

Sitting pretty good if you ask me...

Does it contain any info about the gaping holes in security at Boston's Logan airport... ?

Surely you jest!

Logan is protected by 'F-Troop' of the MA State Police. All these 'career-professionals' are months away from retirement, at least 50lbs. overweight and can smell a doughnut a mile away.

Any more silly questions?!

This was the first of dozens of such visits. Over the next six months, the Commission visited facilities throughout the United States and in various locations abroad.

In other words they flew around on the taxpayers dole and did NOTHING after their "visits".

Press Conference TODAY at 1:00 pm from the Commission. Jamie Gorelick will not be attending. I would not expect the press to ask any questions about Able Danger.

"Get a new commission to interrogate Jamie Gore-lick."

The 'new commission' should be a Congressional panel with subpoena powers - no immunity for Jamie - and then charges that result in her incarceration for longer than she is likely to live.

9/11 Panelists Deny Pentagon Alerts on Atta
Thursday, September 15, 2005
WASHINGTON — While some sources inside the Pentagon who are believed to be credible have said a secret group identified hijackers a year before the Sept. 11 attacks, former members of the Sept. 11 commission (search) said on Wednesday they weren't buying it.

"Bluntly, it just didn't happen and that's the conclusion of all 10 of us," said Sept. 11 commissioner and former Sen. Slade Gorton (search), R-Wash.

The panelists appeared together Wednesday at a news conference to argue that the response to Hurricane Katrina (search) might have been more successful if more of the recommendations they had made last year had been implemented.

The commissioners, who now belong to the Sept. 11 Discourse Project to oversee the translation of their recommendations into reality, played down claims by the Defense Department's secret "Able Danger" group, whose members have said they identified terrorists in the United States more than a year before the 2001 attacks.

Earlier this month, the Pentagon confirmed that it had identified five people involved with Able Danger who claimed they had either seen a picture of lead hijacker Mohamed Atta (search) or had seen his name on a chart prepared in 1999 by the secret military intelligence unit. The Pentagon said that documents associated with the project had been destroyed.
