I saw where the Irish press finally changed California to Carolina.

Thanks for the links. I'll hope the GFDL model is totally incorrect. Glued to the 'puter checking things, first time in a hurricane area. Earthquakes are easier to take, you never know they are coming and they're over before you know they happened, lol.

Thanks NautiNurse!

Frances and esp Ivan hit us HARD in the mtns; the govenor (D) wanted to give all the money (FEMA?) to the eastern part of state. The west raised hell and so some was sent our way.

The search committee has been formed, but they appear to be moving "with all deliberate speed" . . . i.e. you can't be in a hurry in the country!

I like Fr. Bob a lot, and his wife too. They're going to still be around to pitch in, once the new rector is hired.

They have a supply in there now, and he's great, so they may feel like there's not any hurry.

No, I don't believe any hurricanes hit central NC last year - but I think it was Gaston who brought a lot of rain but no wind damage that I can remember - and then went through Richmond, VA leaving flood damage.

Thanks!

Did you see the map that NautiNurse did (above) on the 2004 Hurricanes in NC?

I never realized that NC got that many in one year.

wow - yes - I didnt realize so many came through NC last year - but only Gaston came through my neck of the woods. I remember the flood it made in Richmond more than what it did here in NC. The worst flood damage in NC was in the Mountains last year.

I know, I live in mtns and we got it bad.

But I have never seen anything like Katrina.

I remember Hazel that went through Wake County. That was the first hurricane I remember. Probably before your time.

"Sitting helplessly in your own home listening to the wind and your house make noises you never knew it could make and calculating the relative height of the trees in your backyard vs. their distance from your house gives me the heebie-jeebies."

Amen. And hearing the loud crashes or thuds when trees around your house start falling! Had a pine fall in Fran that missed the house but hit the driveway. Had another pine fall in Floyd that did the same exact thing. The pines that are left (some in neighbor yards) won't miss next time......

They will pay for the contents.. only they are questioning whether we actually had what we are claiming. Now with everything cleaned up and thrown at the landfill, we have no hard proof. Just pictures. They want receipts.

After a year I'm ready to just tell them keep it and just get on with things.

You should be fine. These horror stories only happen ever so often. We just happen to be on the receiving end of one.

Thx for your well wishes.

Actually - I remember Hazel in Wake County. I was here. My grandmother had huge pecan trees in her back yard that came down. I remember not having power and eating some kind of wierd (cold) food during the time right after Hazel. So, yes, I am an old bird.

I hate to keep hijacking this thread for NC hurricanes, but thread is not that busy right now.

Although I live in mtns now, I still have friends in Wake County, and they told me that Fran was a real mess in Raleigh: had to open a dump site just for all debris.

12z suite says Northeast should still watch this storm. Could be a rare hurricane for that part of the country. Most likely at this time would be Long Island and Cape Cod, but could be windy/rainy throughout the coastal big cities.

Gaston did major damage in Richmond, Many of the shops in the Shockoe Bottom area are just now reopening.

They predicted about 2 inches of rain. We got 11 in 8 hours.

There wasn't time to close the floodwall and it wouldn't have helped anyway. The drainage system in the Bottom was overwhelmed.

I was totally shocked by what I read about what Gaston did to Richmond. I have friends in Hampton still dealing with the afetrmath of Isabel, so can understand things not being back to normal in Shockoe Bottom.

And here I sit on this finger of land between the Atlantic and Chesapeake and have gotten through all of them basically unscathed.........go figger.
