It is hard to predict WHAT he would have done. Lee loved his country as well, but when forced to choose, he couldn't betray the land of his birth. I wouldn't be so quick to decide.......
Lee considered himself a Virginian first. Washington believed that that belief was wrong, and that loyalty to country came before loyalty to state. There isn't any question what he would have done.
