In retrospect, I was being a little harsh, and I apologize for my bluntness.

I was born in Mississippi, lived there many years, and returned to go to college there. Since then, I have lived in many areas of the country (including northern California), and overseas as well.

Mississippians are unrivaled for their caring, warmth, and generosity of spirit. The news talks about the horrible things that have happened, but they don't talk about the remarkable, unselfish attitudes of those who are living this disaster. I have to hear this from my family and friends, black and white, who are struggling to maintain dignity and sense of purpose under horrible circumstances.

I'm a little oversensitive maybe.

"I'm a little oversensitive maybe."

I see a lot of non-southerners come to the south, and they see a lot of racism because they are reinforcing their prejudices that the south is a racist place. In other words, they see what they want to see to back up their preconceived notions of the south. I could go from where they are from and pick out the same type of behavior that they cite as racist, etc.

I'm being overwhelmed by comments on this subject. Sorry if I hit a sensitive spot. I should have said, "in my opinion," instead of sounding like I know anything about the South, because I personally don't. Sorry to everyone from the South who holds only love and acceptance for all races and peoples.
