He criticized everybody, all levels of government. So he didn't "Stand up for Democrats" either. He didn't take a partisan line one way or the other. Sorry about that.
No, it's pandering to the sentiment that it's not their fault --- it's economics (which by implication is white mans' fault) --- that puts him squarely with Libs on this matter. TO do that at the time when those Libs are screaming hte same thing at the top of their lungs is somewhat of a betrayal.
