"...At $ 15 or $ 20 an hour any family with insurance and savings could afford to hire a guard to protect their property."

They may have savings, but they have recently become unemployed and more than likely will stay that way for a long, long while unless they move someplace else. As for insurance, if you mean homeowners, they have no flood coverage. If they bought flood insurance, until I had the check in my hand from the feds, I sure would not spend any of it. The feds are going to be pressured to make all the people who couldn't afford or didn't buy any some sort of settlement too. With the initial payment of $ 2000 in a debit card to everybody, I will not be surprised if everybody ends up with some sort of "equal" settlement. Sooner or later there will be pressure to stop handing out $ like water after the first few hundred billion and if you haven't gotten yours before that, you probably won't.

Unfortunately, our federal gov't set a horrible and unfair precedent in the $1million+ per head pay-off to 9/11 victims & families. Now Katrina victims will be arguing (with justification) that their lives have been torn apart just as much, and there will be quite a few more of them.

Class warfare rears its ugly head. Even those that proscribe to registration and confiscation are in a conundrum. The "haves" that dutifully planned for such a misadventure are resoundingly condemned for stockpiling food, water, weapons, and ammunition. The "have nots" are likewise scorched for their dependance on a system that is proven to be a self fulfilling prophecy. Many people in the south incorporate for the simple reason that weapons prohibited for private ownership may be transferred to that corporation. It is extremely unlikely that contractors armed with weapons brought into Louisana from out of state will be asked to surrender said weapons. When the confiscation goes from "little old ladies" with a .22 pistol to a tactical response on the concierge level of the Hilton, please ping me.
Until then, I am absolutely certain that civil order and decorum will prevail. Since it was all initiated for the children, by wonderful elected functionaries.
Lord, please help us preserve our republic.

Someone else suggested that neighbors should simply hire each other, and pay each other the same amount.

They could sit in each other's homes. When the police come, they would say "I can't give you permission, this isn't my home, I'm the hired security guard protecting the property".
