San Diego Union-Tribune, August 2004:
Schwarzenegger has consistently claimed that he supports driver licenses for illegal immigrants.

"I have said it during my campaign. I've said it to Sen. Cedillo and I have said it ever since I got into office that I want every undocumented immigrant to have a driver's license," the governor told reporters earlier this month.

"But," Schwarzenegger cautioned, "we have to solve the security issue – the problem we have of identifying who the people are."

Schwarzenegger, a legal immigrant, said security is his priority.

"It has nothing to do with a mark, or with a Jewish star, or any of that. It has to do only with one thing and this is to make it different so it's acceptable to the California people and it is also just for driving legally and not for anything else."

I hope he's been playing rhetorical games but I expect there is a theoretical bill out there he *would* sign based on his campaign. Anyone who doesn't believe he'd ever sign one is deluded and hasn't listened to him. He's been very consistent that he's not opposed to the principle. This vexes me but I think we can "change his mind" on SB60 with enough noise. The legislature is unreachable. I'm not ready to say Arnold is just yet.

If SB60 is signed, we can't allow it to dissuade us from supporting necessary reforms in November. Can't get distracted.

The campaign against SB60 is the good folks at Save Our License.
