Published: Sep 7, 2005 SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - A majority of California voters say they aren't inclined to re-elect Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, according to a poll released Wednesday.
If the election were held today, the celebrity governor would face a close contest with two little-known Democrats hoping to challenge him in 2006.
The nonpartisan Field Poll found that just 36 percent of voters would support Schwarzenegger, while 56 percent would not. In February, those numbers were almost reversed, with 56 percent saying they were in favor of returning the Republican governor for a second term.
Schwarzenegger has not yet announced plans to seek re-election next year, but he has hinted in recent weeks that he intends to do so soon.
His job approval has dropped substantially over several ballot measures to be decided this November that are aimed at changing the way government operates but are strongly opposed by Democrat-leaning labor unions.
Schwarzenegger won the state's historic 2003 recall election by winning a substantial minority of Democratic and Hispanic voters. The Field Poll found that 82 percent of Democrats and 82 percent of Hispanics aren't inclined to give Schwarzenegger a second term.
Two Democrats have announced plans to run for governor next year - Treasurer Phil Angelides and Controller Steve Westly. The survey found that Schwarzenegger was running neck and neck in matchups with both, even though most voters said they don't know much about either man.
Separately, the poll found that 52 percent of voters want to re-elect Sen. Dianne Feinstein while 38 percent do not. So far, only one Republican - businessman Bill Mundell - has indicated he might challenge Feinstein.
The survey found that in a head-to-head matchup, Feinstein beat Mundell, 56 percent to 30 percent.
The poll of 891 registered voters was taken Aug. 19-29 and had a sampling error of plus or minus 3.5 percentage points.

An unnamed Democrat would have beat Bush in 2004. The problem was they had to name one.
Why? Why wouldn't Californians re-elect Arnold? Did he mess up the evacuation of New Orleans? Should he be inpeached for his failure to act? Was he slow to respond? Did he dither around and defer to som focus group befor he finally took action?
So what does the fact that New Orleans is nowhere NEAR California have to do with anything? People are looking for somebody to blame, and by golly, it looks like Arnold is MUCH more to blame than anyone in Louisiana.

I watch FOX news here in Los Angeles. They have been running ads against Arnold for months, every day. Police, firemen, teachers, nurses...all types in these ads. They are effective. Anyway, I am not sold on Arnold anyhow. So we shall just wait and see who is running.
He can keep right on looking, he ain't welcome here.

IIRC the court challenged it & it was up to Davis/Lockyer to argue the merits of 187.
Naturally, that miserable POS (graduate of matchbook U.) Lockyer allowed the challenge period to expire.
Too bad the goobernator abondoned his strong conservative words- he could have turned the people's republic of california right around.

I agree. Everything I read that McClintock has said or is doing since the election proves he was the only one for the job. A rare politician who actually understands the people and will work for them, not special interests or lobbying groups. The foolishness of the CA people to elect a "popular" person is depressing and destroys my faith in democracy. Democracy can not work if the public is uneducated and disengaged.
Conservatives stay home in disgust, and the liberals are going to end up voting for Rats anyway.
I'm in OH too, and Tom McClintock wouldn't have lasted this long. I give great credit to Arnold for trying to fix that stupid state; and if HE couldn't do it, the Jesus the Messiah would have a hard time fixing that state. It obviously hasn't bottomed out yet.
I realize that it's a distorted, propagandistic Field Poll, however, I am saddened of this reminder of just how much MY STATE has been taken over by STUPID, IDIOTIC, LIBERAL / COMMUNIST CARPET BAGGERS and ILLEGAL ALIENS!

I disagree. It's the far left and the so called "moderates" (e.g. Baby Boomer, professional types who moved here from Blue States) who most want to get rid of Arnie. Look at the anti Arnold billboards put up by the Communist CTA. To be fair, I think Arnie's way too liberal, but those who hate him see anyone to the RIGHT of Stalin as "a fascist pig." That's how they view Arnie, and their propaganda is starting to stick with the soccer moms and high tech weenies.
But to the socialists, he still not left enough. The Communists in the CTA have successfully propagandized and the soccer moms have gone for it hook, line and sinker.
