If the schoolbuses had been deployed when evacuation was ordered, they would have been able to pick up those who were unable to evacuate and, at the very least, get them to higher gtound in the city or to the Dome or convention center. They did not have to be taken out of the city if traffic was jammed. Many, many drowned. In nursing homes, hospices, attics, and many in their beds because the city did not deploy the buses. Better to be safe in a traffic jam on high gtound, than dead.

Haven't seen this mentioned yet, so I will join the discussion. This storm was a Eastbank event for New Orleans, not an Westbank event. There was very little wind damage from the storm on the west wall, flooding was the problem. Since we are looking at possible transportation issues for those stranded at the Dome, see the image below.

However, besides hundreds of buses, there were many water towers that were unaffected, tons of trucking centers with available trucks (hotwire if you need too) and plenty of supplies in warehouses that had a dry route to the dome. Why didn't the Mayor/Governor use the resources available?

There wasn't much "high ground" on the first 3 days of last week.

Thanks. I understand now, and agree.

All I remember from that Sunday were the cars lined up to go out of town. But there is NO excuse for what the leaders of the town did. They were thinking of their own political career and not the lives of the poor souls in hospitals, nursing homes, etc.

If they had used the incoming lanes on the highway, there would have been no traffic jam. Those buses could have gone full speed in their own lanes.
