I posted this news story about 10 minutes ago, but for some reason, the FR website manager locked the thread. I just reposted the story because this news is extremely important. It explains why the situation in New Orleans deteriorated so quickly. The first responders were AWOL!

the New Orleans police force was left with only a third of its pre-storm 1,500-person strength.

Un-be-lieveable. Just freaking unbelieveable.

Was there anything that went right with this city?

But he said any suggestion that the National Guard had not performed well or was late was a "low blow."

Yes it is.

What are the penalties for law enforcement officers who abandon their duties during a situation like this?

"Now get off your asses and let's do something and fix the biggest goddamn crisis in the history of this country," the mayor said in remarks aired on CNN.

The Mayor should have gotten off his bleep and done something

This is not half as bad as an article linked to on the Drudge Report (Guardsmen 'played cards' amid New Orleans chaos: police official).
Riley went on: "We have been fired on with automatic weapons. We still have some thugs around. My biggest disappointment is with the federal government and the National Guard.

"The guard arrived 48 hours after the hurricane with 40 trucks. They drove their trucks in and went to sleep.

"For 72 hours this police department and the fire department and handful of citizens were alone rescuing people. We have people who died while the National Guard sat and played cards. I understand why we are not winning the war in Iraq if this is what we have."

I am not amused by New Orleans deputy police commander Riley's comments.

Bush, under intense criticism for the slow federal response, on Saturday ordered an additional 7,000 active duty and reserve ground troops to reinforce the National Guard

Its now a fact, to the media, that the federal response was slow.

On Friday, New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin angrily denounced the slow federal response as too little, too late, charging that promised troops had not arrived in time.

Blum said that since Thursday some 7,000 National Guard and military police had moved into the city.

So Nagin lied. Then he cried.

At the time he made that statement the NG already had 5 times his full strength police force in the city.

While I can understand how some officers could not get to work, and others would take care of their family first, I can't understand why the governor refused to declare an emergency till Saturday, and why Nagin did not ask for state troopers when his guys didn't show up.

Dear fellow Freepers. We all must be prepared to survive and provide for our families for a minimum of one week without any kind of outside aid or assistance from anyone. For some of us this will be easy, for others it will require a deal of study and preparation. But do it now!

All Americans should make the same preparations but they won't. Freepers are more intelligent, informed and imaginative and therefore more willing to accept a word from the wise.

Blum said that since Thursday some 7,000 National Guard and military police had moved into the city.

That Arthel woman that used to appear sometimes on O'Reilly's show said that her cousin told her that one man in the convnetion center took the weapon away from a National Guardman and killed him with it.

She also said that a man raped and then killed a 7 year old girl. After which 5 guys beat the guy to death. Really unbelieveable behavior.

Nothing like a touch of class to make things go forward faster.

The only "asses" I've noticed so far are Nagin and Blanco. (Well, them and the looters shooting at the relief workers. Duh.)

As the details dribble out it is going to comeback and hit all the jerks in the face screaming "it's Bush's fault".

Hey! I bet it's Karl Roves fault. He's trying to make the Iraqi police force appear more stable.

Some Bush-bashers are now starting to say that stories of violence and chaos were just rumors being used to cover for delays in evacuation and provision. But here is just a brief sample of reports over the last week:

New Orleans in Anarchy With Fights, Rapes

NEW ORLEANS (9/2/05) -- New Orleans descended into anarchy Thursday as corpses lay abandoned in street medians, fights and fires broke out, cops turned in their badges and the governor declared war on looters who have made the city a menacing landscape of disorder and fear.

Looting Escalates in New Orleans

NEW ORLEANS (9/1/05) -- With thousands feared dead and the city's remaining residents told to evacuate for weeks, conditions deteriorated further in submerged New Orleans as looting spiraled out of control... "They are starting to get closer to heavily populated areas — hotels, hospitals, and we're going to stop it right now," Nagin said Wednesday.

New Orleans thugs rape, loot and shoot

NEW ORLEANS (9/2/05) -- An explosion jolted residents awake early today, illuminating the pre-dawn sky with red and orange flames over the city where corpses rotted along flooded sidewalks and bands of armed thugs thwarted fitful rescue efforts. Congress was rushing through a $10.5 billion aid package, the Pentagon promised 1,400 National Guardsmen a day to stop the looting.

Looting Takes Place in View of La. Police

NEW ORLEANS (8/30/05) -- With much of the city flooded by Hurricane Katrina, looters floated garbage cans filled with clothing and jewelry down the street in a dash to grab what they could. In some cases, looting on Tuesday took place in full view of police and National Guard troops.

This would not have happened had there been an effective police force operating in the city. A workable local emergency plan likely would have prevented the breakdown in order. Sadly, none existed, but that is not the responsibility of the federal government. Without basic security, federal and volunteer relief workers could not move into New Orleans and save the innocent.

The U.S. government worked their way through a hurricane ravaged region the size of Great Britain and then through the anarchy that had emerged in New Orleans. They've evacuated that city now in less than five days since the flood waters started rising. They deserve America's gratitude, not condemnation, for this accomplishment and for their accompishments to come.

50 000 troops now in NO!

It's virtualy war / civil-war

I would not accept Castro's poisoned gift of 1100 doctors

And Bush and our nation seem to be completely clueless at the level of corruption, terrorism and terror support going on in liberal elite and government circles.

This is the kind of premature wake up call the Ruskies don't want us to go through. Tie in Castro's offers and you get the picture that maybe they are preparing a first strike on US soil as we "speak"!!! Terror nuke strike, ground prep for full blown WWIII or WWIII itself.

Two thirds of the Police take off! Not Good!

Well, my nephew didn't take off, he's been there since the beginning and still is. When I get the chance I will ask him, so far it is difficult for him to get information out, only two times this week, once early Friday morning and once yesterday.

Those 1000 officers should be charged with official misconduct, derelict of duty, possession of illegal and stolen firearms, impersonating a police officers, 2nd degree murder and stripped of all pensions and benefits then imprisoned
