I work at the charity hospital here in Baton Rouge; we have been defined as a decrepit, falling-down, outdated, campus that should have been torn down. Well I'm sure that there are many patients that we are caring for that are grateful that we haven't been "put down". "All" the evacuees are not being shipped out the state. Baton Rouge had a pop of 225-250K; by this weekend we expect to be around 600K +/- and are taking care of the sickest of the sick as we are the closest. Your "refugees" will soon begin to filter back and will be in Beaumont, Lake Charles, Crowley, Lafayette, and finally Baton Rouge as a holding area. Thanks for your help and don't worry I can assure you we have a lot more that you. I don't know what your "notions as to why" are, but if you had a notion to come give a hand here I'd thank you personally!

It isn't being reported. We live in a small town south of Houston and no reporting of surrounding cities/towns helping. We are from Louisiana and you'd never know Louisiana was doing a thing. Relatives are telling us. MSM is focusing on what they want to... shock.

Every decent sized town in central Texas has a shelter open and is collecting massive amounts of food, clothing, and money for the victims of Katrina. Our school district is ready for a large influx of kids. Texans will take care of our neighbors. If they want to work here we have plenty of jobs. If they don't, they'll soon find out our social safety net isn't quite like some other states and move on.

Atchafalaya, I know exactly where you are and can't imagine the chaos there. I grew up not far from Charity BR and went to high school within sight almost. Airline highway used to be pretty safe around there but I understand it is now a dangerous place to linger even before this happened. My gut feeling is that you are right and BR will become the " New" New Orleans with all the worst that has to offer. My brother is an internist at the BR Clinic and is already picking up some of the slack at some triage center at LSU. Are you guys just a holding facility or do you plan to ship patients out when beds are available?
