Just to weigh in (as if my humble opinion matters to the President): You've got to go with Scalia. It's not "traditional" to promote from within, but he's earned it and he's the anchor.

I could understand the sentiment to go with Justice Thomas, but I believe Justice Scalia has already been doing the kinds of things you'd want from a CJ, and I fear another Thomas hearing.

Chief Rehnquist made this job his life's work, and truly a lifetime appointment.

Absolutely. He's brilliant, a gifted scribe, forthright speaker, forward thinker. It's a done deal.
