I am not sure how many hurricanes you have had to evacuate from but I have had to do so at least 15 times with only two actually necessary. The Evacuation for Katrina ran much more smooth than that for Ivan. The few Roads out of town were converted to Contraflow on Saturday afternoon and the mayor STRONGLY suggested that people evacuate on Saturday morning.

Even with an evacuation underway by Noon on Saturday and all lanes on all roads open traffic was bumper to bumper from Saturday afternoon until Monday morning. The Buses would have only complicated matters and even during a "Mandatory Evacuation" people are still Free to Stay in their homes.

Matters are all peachy keen now though right?

Hindsight is what it is.
Leadership is what it is.
NOLA's leaders had neither, and this article shows it.

The mayor did not order the evacuation on Saturday. He did on Sunday only after a call from the President.

The buses could have been prepositioned at the Superdome and the convention center. That would have enabled a local first response to get survivors out of the city after the storm. Instead they left the bus fleet to become inundated.

The incompetence of the local authorities and the governor was of criminal proportions. They obviously had NO plan for what everyone has known for decades would be the result if the city were hit by a Cat #3 hurricane.

I have never had to evacuate for a hurricane simply because of where I lived in Miami.........far inland away from the storm surge.

By contrast, my aunt in Key Biscayne is required to evacuate every single time a hurricane hits Miami to stay with my cousins who live in the inland Miami area where I used to live.

I discussed the matter of storm surge on Post 11 of this thread.

In Florida, evacuation orders are given with 48 hours lead time.

As far as "complicating matters", one school bus carrying 70 human beings complicates the matter far less than 14 automobiles carrying 5 human beings each.

Allowing the poor people to evacuate would have complicated matters for whom? For you? I guess they don't matter. How convenient for you that you didn't have to share the road with them.

There are not many people that are thankful that everyone didn't get out, you just happen to be one of them.
