Black Democrats in Congress and civil rights leaders yesterday accused the Bush administration of incompetence and a lack of compassion for blacks in response to the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
"Many of these Americans who now are struggling to survive are Americans of color," Rep. Elijah E. Cummings, Maryland Democrat, said. "Their cries for assistance confront America with a test of our moral compass as a nation."
He quoted the admonition of Christ to feed the hungry and clothe the naked, and said: "To the president of the United States, I simply say that God cannot be pleased with our response."
Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, the highest-ranking black member of the administration, rejected the suggestion of racism in the government's response.
"That Americans would somehow in a color-affected way decide who to help and who not to help -- I just don't believe it," she said. "Americans are generous to each other, and I think you're seeing that people are opening their homes to people who are displaced and have had to be evacuated."
Black leaders at a press conference in Washington criticized news coverage they said has depicted blacks in New Orleans as looters and refugees.
"We cannot allow ourselves to see only the black faces doing the looting and not see the homeowners, the families, the children who have lost everything," said Dorothy I. Height, president emeritus of the National Council of Negro Women.
Mr. Cummings objected to the use of the term "refugees," which news organizations have applied to both whites and blacks left homeless by the storm. Dictionaries typically define "refugee" as "one who flees for safety, especially to a foreign country."
"I hate the term refugees," he said. "Americans are dying, not refugees. ...

Because white liberals keep running interference for incompetent black and white leaders when blacks are the victims.
An eloquent conservative needs to stand up and speak directly to the black people to help them see the light.
Bump!
Maryland's Lt. Governor, Michael S. Steele
He'll be seeking the MD Senate seat being vacated by retiring Sen Sarbanes.
Amazing that he is still clinging to the threadbare banner of the social gospel. Christ's admonition to feed the hungry did not include tasking government with forcibly removing countless billions from one sector of the population in order to inefficiently give it another without regard for the heart and soul of the recipient. But I suppose the social gospel was never too concerned with the soul of the people, was it?
They use scripture as a tool for power, not as a tool for good.
Indeed. The telling fact is that the social gospel is no longer a potent force for political organization in America, and hasn't been for decades. The idea was just quietly dropped some time ago.
I thought white was a color.
Is not white a color?
My momma taught me white was a color. My teachers taught me white was a color.
Does anybody else out there think white is a color?
Anyone?
Anyone?
Ferris?
Elijah Cummings would not dare step foot in any area of devastation that has white people present. Many whites suffered as much or more than the people of New Orleans. There were 135,000 whites in New Orleans, 15,000 Hispanics and 11,000 Asians. Elijah "Color Me Black" Cummings is color blind.
What a disgraceful pice of S. I am not white, you P.O.S, and my wife is not white, but we are not color blind--whites suffered too!
We're Americans hurting for fellow Americans. The Dems can only try to poison the good.

Keith Johnson, a 28-year-old sheriff's deputy from New Orleans, lay in the grass and cried.
He'd just gotten off a plane from the beleaguered Big Easy after being trapped on a highway overpass for two days without food or water. Before that, he toiled with other deputies, rescuing people trapped all over the city.
The exhausted man tried to tell his story, but his words jumbled: "We walked from the overpass to the dome in 5 feet of water. Through oil and feces and filth."

One is from AP, the other from AFP, a foreign organization. This entire race issue is pathetic, and it's so typical. I really hate democrats.
It depends on what was taken. The photo of the white couple clearly states that they 'found' bread and Coca-Cola. In other words, something to eat and something to drink.
Yet the photo of the black youth doesn't mention what was 'looted'. If it was beer and cigarettes, that's looting. If it was bread and bottled water, no it was not. But only the photographer and the black youth know for sure.
68% of New Orleans population declared themselves black in the 2004 census.
I was talking to my neighbor about all this "racism" this AM and made this statement.
"If this disaster was a poker game, President Bush would win every hand. He is playing with a full deck and the CBC, Revs Jack@$$ and $harpton are playing with one card - the RACE CARD."
I guess all the donations pouring in aren't from any white peeps, huh?
Great point.
Democrats divide.
They're snakes in the grass.
LIBERALS must have power and for them that means government control.
The very idea that people be educated and prosperous is like showing a vampire a cross.
Roger Hedgecock hosted for Rush Friday. The gist of what he said, (my words): The local pols NEVER want to use their
budget today, when Federal Funds will come next month.
In other words, they didn't want to pay for it.
Geez... NEWS FLASH FOLKS! Most of the refugees and looters are Black! That's not opinion, that's fact for cryin out loud.
Man I hate this crap... When I was watching the news footage Thursday night of all the Black folks at the NO Convention Center screaming stuff like... "Where's the state?! The state is supposed to be takin' care of me!" I just knew that the race baiter's (Aka Jesse, AL and the rest of the gang) were going to turn out in droves for the camera's on Friday to start stirring the pot. As if we don't have enough problems just trying to get help where it is needed for ALL of Katrina's victims... Not just the ones in NO.
GRRRRR!!!!
But.........Reeeeeeeeverend Al......said these were hard-working taxpayers left out there? Which is it? /sarc
