Sorry, but Bush has had five years already to do something about illegals, and the fact that "they aren't going anywhere" is precisely the problem.

Do you think that Bush will immediately tackle the issue now, right this very moment, considering the fact that an entire city and coastal communities has been wiped out like Pompeii?

The problem with Bush is that he's been "tackling" the issue throughout his whole presidency, just in the wrong direction. His constant kissing up to Vincent Fox, his slandering of the Minutemen as "vigilantes", his pushing for an amnesty program - these things would make mere inertia seem welcome.

I agree---who wouldn't?---that the disaster in the Gulf States needs immediate attention. It's going to be getting most of our attention here in America for weeks if not months, and we'll all feel its effects.

Another point though is, just as we had a storm of wind and water that came into our borders five days ago that we couldn't ignore, we've had for as long as Bush has been President a storm of illegal immigrants coming into our borders too, costing taxpayers much more each year than Katrina is going to cost at one go, and more and more American citizens are discovering that they simply can't ignore its effects (well, except one apparently...). The effects of the latter storm are more pernicious and more lasting than the first, bad as it is, and the clean-up from its devastation is going to be longer and more costly. Believe me.
