The local lib radio host kept blabbing about Bush "slashing" the levee project from $80 million to $40 million. Ok, but how was the $40 million that they did get spent? How much money was the bureaucracy sitting on already?

They ignore that Carter cut that funding, that Clinton cut it more and that the levee that broke had already been repaired. The Bush cuts had absolutely NOTHING to do with this flood.

Wake up! The reason the residents of New Orleans did not evacuate their homes prior to the hurricane is a reason well known to the residents. The minute you leave your home, it will be robbed by your neighbor.

The weakest were going to be victimized either by the storm or their neighbor. The Storm was a possibility, the pillaging by your neighbor an absolute. Too bad the victims were victims twice.

Doesn't matter quite so much. The levees were never *designed* for a storm as extreme as the one that hit. They would've needed at least a year and probably a billion dollars to make them more capable. CNN ran a piece on a 'plan' to do this. It's up to the People's representatives to make sure crap like this gets done. Forget that, the mayor didn't act to evacuate his people. He squandered at least two full days (while getting his own family out, mind you) and left hundreds of reliable transportation units in the form of school buses unused.

Now, like a spoil brat, he throws a fit. And with Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, the Congressional Black Caucus lining up to play the race card and RFK Jr (and others) playing the global warming card, he'll have plenty of cover as long as he tows the Democrat line of attack.

Plus it would have taken YEARS before the project was finished, approximately 2015, so it should have been started during the early to mid 90s -- which was Clinton's reign of terror...I mean, era.

I am a former resident of New Orleans (moved to Jackson, MS in 1999). There are several things that we need to get across about this levy nonsense.

1. The debate over adequacy of the levies has been on-going for more than 30 years. It did not just start with Bush.

2. The section of the levy that collapsed WAS RECENTLY UPGRADED! (call the trial lawyers - obviously this was negligent)

3. One of the biggest opponents to levy improvements over the years have been environmental groups.

4. Even if Bush spent $100 billion on levy improvements there is no guarantee that they would have been completed in time to prevent this disaster. Its not like playing SIM City where you throw money at something and - VIOLA- you have better levies. The improvements would have been done in phases over several years.

Good news: The American public isn't buying the blame Bush line. http://abcnews.go.com/US/HurricaneKatrina/story?id=1094262&page=1
Even so, he isn't up for re-election. Nagin and Blanco will be, although Blanco isn't up until 2007. (Not sure about Nagin).
