Tonight on Nightline, during an inteview with the FEMA director, Ted Koppel demanded to know why the Bush Administration did not send fleets of buses into New Orleans to evacuate those too poor to evacuate themselves -- PRIOR TO KATRINA HITTING NEW ORLEANS.
For previous hurricanes the Federal Government did not participate in evacuations, only in clean up and recovery. That did not seem to matter much to Koppel since he obviously knew that Mike Brown was too much of a gentleman to smack him for attempting to deceived the American people.
However, Koppel does have a point, in a way. The Bush Administration should have known the Louisiana and New Orleans governments would be too incompetent to do anything right, and should have planned for it.

If it weren't so tragic, it's down right laughable. I'm actually laughing as I type this now. Kaptain Kopel TO THE RESCUE. BY GOLLY, IT'S kOPEL WHO'LL GET TO THE BOTTOM OF THIS...ERrr, lAKE nEW oRLEANS..WHATEVER.
Kaptain Kopel DEMANDED! (sarc)The GREAT almighty Demander of tv screens, the DEMANDER of commanders... the Demander of Demeanor.... Kopel, go buy a new toupee', one less helmut like in appearance. Dork
According to the media, it's the governments fault for going after looters, instead of ordering domino's pizza and passing it around to the "hungry" people (who weigh 400 lbs) media are interviewing who haven't eaten for a day, because they were too busy carting off loot.
Hey, Ted, have another glass of Kool-aid. Here's a tinfoil hat for you to wear.
Among a bunch of has-beens, Ted Koppel is chief. Can't remember the last time I saw him on anything, because I haven't watched Always Been Communists for years.
It is the responsibility of the States and local governments to plan for disasters. FEMA is invited in and is really only suppose to serve as a back up not first source of aid. Poor evacuation planning is not the fault of the Federal Gov't. How are they suppose to know the needs of every community?
priceless !
Why didn't Koppel ask this question before the hurricane hit?
" The Bush Administration should have known the Louisiana and New Orleans governments would be too incompetent to do anything right, and should have planned for it."
That's the 600 lb elephant sitting in the middle of the room, that the media will continue to ignore.
And I guarandamntee you, that had President Bush stepped in more forcefully before the hurricane ( and legally, I am not sure exactly what more he could have done )
the Democrats and the media would have been apoplectic , claiming he was undercutting the mayor and governor because they were Democrats.
Who's Ted Koppel? :^)
I'm starting to thing we need to close our NORTHERN borders from a$$holes yankees like this.
The Category 5 'Rat onslaught against the GOP has begun. Whichever GOPers can't see it will be swept away in its aftermath.
No its all Bush's fault.
The Mayor should have taken the responsibility.
Yep...add his name to the list of losers.

The desperation in the libs is really getting old. Worn out. Same old line. Maybe some are right, when they say the Dems have finally reached their ultimate state of uselessness and irrelevancy.
They are really looking pretty damned stupid!!
Someone emailed Rush today saying that the Dems can drive all those inner city people to the polls to get their votes, but they wouldn't drive them out of the city to save their lives!
I just can't stand these people anymore. They are evil. They work hard at dividing America, even (and especially) in the midst of crisis and pain. If Koppel had a pimple on his a$$ it would inevitably be George Bush's fault.
No, the evacuation order came very late compared to what was known. Katrina was a Category 3 and strengthening a full week before it hit. It was a very slow moving storm (which is why there was so much warning and also why it was so dangerous). The projected path was known a week before it hit. I don't think the evacuation order was issued by the Governor and Mayor until Saturday or Sunday.
But I don't think anyone thought the leavee would fail. I think people thought water might come over the top, but not fail completely. The New Orleans city page tells it all. It's stuck in time to before the storm. The mayor is actually telling people how to ride out the storm.
FEMA does not have the authority nor the capacity to forcibly remove people from their homes, not does it have the responsibility for pre-disaster evacuations. New Orleans has a huge mass transit system, why did the City not start loading people without cars onto buses and get them out of town?
If I fault anyone, and I really don't, its the National Hurricane Center for not beating people over the head saying "this storm could be worse than Camille." That would have gotten people's attention. I never heard those words spoken and followe these things closely because I have family and friends up and down the Gulf Coast and I remember Camille vividly.
Ted Koppel trying to prevent the DEMS in LA for shouldering the fault for their incompetance? I'm shocked!
Ted, explain this to me. Why is only a DEM area unable to handle a crisis? Why is it DEMS mainly looting the city? Why is it Alabama and MISS and even other Republican areas of LA that aren't having these problems? Why is it Perry, Governor of TEXAS, is having to manage two states now because Blanco is too busy crying on TV? You political hack.
The dem politicians in NO can get the voters to the polls days earlier, but they couldn't help them in a natural disaster? That shows their priorities, doesn't it?
