I wish some of the northern states would offer to help with taking in some of the refugees. Maybe they have and I just have not heard about it.
Reports of beatings, rapes, and widespread looting are something of a disincentive, I'm afraid. That despite the fact that the vast majority of refugees aren't part of those crimes.
I live in a northern state... Oregon... unfortunately, living this far away, it's difficult to do anything other than send money. I can handle a family at my house, but how do they get here? And by the time a truckload of (anything important, such as water/food) arrived, it would be days from now. People need clean drinking water and food NOW, not days from now.
So please don't think "northern states" don't want to help, we do. It's just not as easy as it is for Texas, since y'all are neighbors.
I am sure you can count on the load balancing. The local nightly news in Central Illinois had a segment about a couple's 12 family members that are going to seek shelter here. I would venture to guess Chicago will be seeing some rather substantial inflows.
I think the logistics are just to extreme to actually bus people that far away. Makes sense to try and find something close. Hopefully some will be able to return to LA if all is not lost.
