I'm thinking my neighborhood needs to have a plan. I wonder how much a satellite phone costs. It would be good to have one available, and I wonder if a group could purchase one.
why not get a ham radio and license instead. A lot cheaper
Mountaineers use them frequently. IIRC the unit goes for $1500, and the service is $5 per minute.
Immarsat makes them, and I don't know if the older Iridiums are still available or will still work with the system.
