This is just weird. The press actually seemed quite reluctant to report the looting and violence at first, but now it is so out of control nobody can ignore it. For the Governor to say the media is exaggerating is simply spin. She doesn't want NO shown in a bad light. Hey, I don't have a lower opinion of New Orleanians because of this. I would be willing to bet the situation would be pretty similar in any major American city. Unfortunately that's what happens when human beings are put in situations like this. Anyone ever read Heart of Darkness or Lord of the Flies? I am in no way excusing this uncivilized behavior. It's appalling and must be stopped, but it really doesn't surprise me.

I spoke to my friend in Luling, LA (30 miles from downtown NO) this morning and she expressed concern about the very thing you mentioned. I assured her that any thinking person knows the looters aren't representative of the people of New Orleans.
