I thin Tsunami ended up to be 250,000 - 275,000. I doubt this will top it. But Tsunami covered FAR more acreage and multiple countries and it was a much bigger wave and less preparation. So, if even close to 50k die in NO/MS/AL with ample warning, someones head should roll.
~LOL~ just commenting that nothing is ever for ever. We could be hit here in Arizona by a meteor tomorrow and that would change the whole world. As I age, I learn that we have to be self-sufficient and we have to realize that change happens... and sometimes for a reason... I suspect as bad as this is right now, it could turn out to be a good thing down the line... depends on how we all step up to the plate as American's and I don't like the example of looting.
Hell they designated it an evacuation center. Am I missing something?
The Mayor of Waterworld? Is he sober tonight?
Ditto!! What did he say?
Uhhh, can we say Act of Terrorism vs Act of God.
More buses are expected between 1:00 and 3:00 am this morning at the Astro Dome - first buses had mainly had women and children on them.
Tough questions?!? He's standing in front of the Superdome and asking where people should go! That isn't asking tough questions. That is exhibiting idiocy. And exactly who did he ask? Some idiot cop who refused to even talk to him, and a State Patrol lady who I don't think was ever completely identified and certainly wasn't in a position to direct city evacuation efforts (maybe he should have asked her about the conditions of interstates outside of New Orleans since that is the jurisdiction of State Troopers). You ask if I think the people asking him the same question were clueless? Well, let's look at the facts. First of all, despite all the warnings, despite orders to evacuate, and despite offers of free bus rides to shelters before the hurricane hit these folks are wondering around an interstate days after the hurricane hit. Strike one. Second, they were smart enough to migrate to Interstate 10 and the Superdome after surviving the hurricane, but not quite smart enough to walk the extra half mile to complete the pilgrimage to that HUGE domed building hovering over Shep's shoulder. Strike two. And when it becomes obvious that sitting on Interstate 10 in the hot sun isn't very productive, they ignore the Salvation Army rescue centers positioned below the bridge they are sitting on, and DEMAND to be told where to go. Strike three. Yes. I believe they are, in fact, clueless. That sounds harsh, but it is hard to ignore the obvious. If Shep wants to join in their inability to grasp the obvious, I just have to question his motives.
Don't miss post #106 this thread... http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/news/1474387/posts?page=106#106
#805 and #950 are worth while, too.

If Extreme Home Makeover can build a huge house in 7 days, maybe FEMA could build a bunch of apartment buildings in a month or so to house refugees?
Ack. Thanks. I think...
What is wrong with the people of Louisiana? If you have a school gym, why in God's name, isn't it a shelter? There must be 10,000 school buses in the state, but nobody wants to use their precious gas to go get them. I hope I never have to live "neighborly" Louisiana. Is the Governor on vacation, or what?
The arrival of the first refugees at the Astrodome. This was a school bus driven by a 20-year-old. One woman with infant was picked up hitch-hiking to Houston from NO and was in tears of relief.
I say... you HAVE to help them. They are, afterall, our countrymen. We all want our comfort and personal space but our nation comes first. "There but for the grace of God go I." It's the only sensible answer.
I missed it... do tell?????
Did you miss it this afternoon when he spent his entire broadcast making sure authorities knew just where to find people? And continually talking about all the people on the bridge and what risks they were facing? Even had an emergency mangement person and told her where to find people?
A few hours ago I might have agreed with you but have been looking at satelite photo taken yesterday. Uptown New Orleans, Meterie, and all along the River including the French Quarter are dry. If they slow the flow of water and manage to stop it coming in from the 17th Street Canal this is pretty darn good and demonstrates that less than 80% of the City is flooded (I'm not counting Meterie where I grew up, only the City). It could be the City goes back to being smaller but I do believe it will come back, there is just too much good stuff there. Besides all the port facilities on the River, which are probably not that bad, its better to rebuild than relocate.
Years ago we helped the Dutch design their dykes perhaps they could now help New Orleans with their levees.
