Here is the lead to a story from the MS Clarion Ledger this morning:

Gov. Haley Barbour predicted the death toll from Katrina will surpass the record by which all hurricanes are measured — Camille, which killed 143 people in 1969.

Barbour toured the devastated area Tuesday and described how a half mile between the Gulf Coast and the railroad had been swept clean of casinos, restaurants, houses and other structures.

According to The World Almanac the death toll from Camille was 256. Possibly 143 was the number killed just in Mississippi.
