People too foolish to think realistically for themselves waste valuable time relying on political hacks for the obvious. Perhaps post-modern socialism has stripped common sense from even Biblebelt Americans.

The hacks will seldom say smart things openly, which while wisdom for individuals is a "falacy in composition" (aka stupid for the unwashed masses). "It is manditory to leave if you're in your SUV, but for those walking, stay put - out of our way." No hack would say to all with only hours to spare, RUN!" because hundreds of thousands would die in the streets. Hacks STATEMENTS wait until it's too late.

New Orleans is a suicide bowl. Elsewhere along the Gulf Coast is only a few feet above calm seas.

Why in HELLo wait when any thinking person can understand NOAA's warnings to evacuate inland?

Thousands of fools and some plain unlucky died and shall continue to die because of their lack of self-preservation. Common sense is so uncommon these days.

Have Americans learned anything?

Why do people live in Trailers in Kansas?

Why do people build on the San Andreas?

Why do people lives on the coasts?

I am sure the answers will vary, but while NO was set up for a disaster, efficient planning could have prevented the human disaster. Maybe NOT the property disaster, but the human disaster for sure.

but you aren't going to walk out of NO and into safety in anything less than 3 days. Most of the people that have been stranded don't look to be in ANY shape to be able to walk that far either.

I think your rant about hacks is really misplaced.

They are called leaders for a reason. In this case, the leaders of New Orleans failed their citizens.

Truth this blunt is seldom rewarded at FR. But you're absolutely right. The dangers and lack of preparation for disasters has been on the record for years.

Your remarks suddenly made me think of the tornados that hit Denver about 15 years ago. Just as I was burrowing under my (basement-less) house, I saw entire families up and down the block, standing in the street looking at the pretty tornado.

Right at that moment, it was tearing 60-70 foot cottownods out of the ground only five blocks away.

Go figure.
