How about HAM radio? I thought these guys were still very much around for this kind of thing. One would think four or five deep cell marine batteries with a few solar chargers could keep them running indefinitly?

I've heard but cannot confirm that HAMs in some of the Gulf Coast areas haven't been transmitting, partly because they may no longer be there. HAMs are known for their resourcefulness and resiliency, so I expect to hear them over the air soon.
