I would think technology would allow for taking a DNA sample from the corpse, tagging it and keeping track of how the body was disposed and handle the ID matching after the fact.

True. And with military in charge, their body-handling procedures would be set up for exactly that sort of thing.

dental x-rays are commonly scanned and turned into computer files. As long as the computer backup repositories are physically secure from flooding, and heat doesn't warp the tapes or whatever the backups are stored on, the old-rays will be available. And new dental x-rays of the bodies' teeth can be made.

Computer programs are available for rapid comparisons, especially to eliminate obvious mis-matches.

So old dental x-rays can be used to identify large numbers of bodies with a reasonable amount of effort and expense.

Combine both dental x-rays and DNA comparisons, and it is definitely feasible to identify most missing persons for even the worst-case scenario numbers here.
