If this doesn't convince people that they need to be prepared for a disaster and able to be self-sustaining for a minimum of a week; nothing ever will.

When we lived in So. Cal we kept a backpack with water, food, radio, money, in each car as well as a pair of running shoes.

Very wise. From what I've heard, the #1 injury during an earthquake is cuts to the feet from glass and ragged masonry.
