it will take hours to get it truly plugged

You can't fix a leak like this until the water stops rushing in. I would guess that even 3000 pound sandbags will do nothing but get washed away.

(And there are other disasters -- natural and man-made-- that could require evacuation.)

AFAIK, there was no "plan" in place for the four years I was in grad school in Pensacola, either -- other than my own "load the cat in the car and drive north" plan.

You are correct. Natural Gas is another problem. Port Fourchon, LA is one of the MAJOR pumping stations in the USA. The gas fields south of Grand Isle, LA are one of the two largest in the nation.

This is erily close to the special FX (Fox) showed this summer about what would happen to this country should this very scenario happen.... This isn't going to be a pretty winter if the other half of their scenario comes to fruition.

3:25 P.M. - With conditions in the hurricane-ravaged city of New Orleans rapidly deteriorating, Gov. Kathleen Blanco said Tuesday that people now huddled in the Superdome and other rescue centers need to be evacuated.

"The situation is untenable," Blanco said during a news conference. "It's just heartbreaking."

Well, now the governor is going to evacuate everybody left in New Orleans!

The Tulane hospital has lost almost all it's power. They are losing backup generator power; evacuating patients now.

So you think it is smart for tourists to go to NO when there are no contingency plans to get them out during an approaching hurricane?

My contingency plan when vacationing is to be aware of approaching hurricanes and get myself out.

I'm a news nut and knew what was up and never would have guessed that storm would really pass thru FLA and keep going to NO.

My deepest sympathies go out to you and all the people in that region. I can't believe this has happened.

Id' be interested in hearing predictions for the future of New Orleans.

I think tourists should boycott NO untill there is a plan in place to evacuate them in case of an emergency. Otherwise, it won't get done.

You make an excellent point about not having plans to evacuate tourists. All I can say is I"m glad I saw NO three times in my lifetime.

After seeing the I-10 bridge that is in tatters (how's the East-West interstate? I hadn't heard anything on its condition), and wondering how long it will be until they can fix the levee, I am seriously starting to wonder if the city will become a ghost town for a while, maybe even a long time.

They can't begin to rebuild until the water dries up, and how long will that take? How long will it take to rebuild the bridge? Power will be out for weeks, they're saying; people can't live without power for that long.

Does anyone else have any thoughts on this, how long it will take before they can even begin to rebuild?

Malacoda: "There's no plan to get my ass out of PHILADEPHIA if something bad happens!"

dirtboy: "Philadelphia isn't below sea level in hurricane country."

You're right, dirtboy....no hurricanes. Only Philadelphia has been threatened by terrorists for years. I'd say Malacoda has reason to be concerned.

Mary Landrieu is in shock, her face keeps twitching. She looks like she is at a funeral.

No doubt. Say what you will about her, NO is probably her heart and soul, and now it's devastated beyond anything she could have imagined. It is a funeral.

"I think the last thing the media has time to do right now is filter out people with "unacceptable" accents."

That comment was more about the news media themselves than the people they interview. All the media people seem to have the same neutral voice that media people seem to have everywhere. I know the media aren't hand-picking storm victims to find ones with no accents.

Mary Landrieu is in shock, her face keeps twitching.

Perhaps because she's remembering that SHE didn't do anything to prevent this.

I don't know the LA politicians too well but so far they don't seem to instill confidence.

At this point, we should be blaming this on the Democrats.
