MOSCOW, August 30 (RIA Novosti) - Russia is ready to assist the United States in dealing with the damage caused by hurricane Katrina, which has taken 68 lives so far and left behind a tremendous amount of devastation, Russian President Vladimir Putin said in a message to U.S. President George Bush Tuesday.
"Russia deeply sympathizes with Americans, who faced a disaster of such a colossal scale, and is ready to offer necessary assistance," the Kremlin press service quoted Putin as saying.
Similar sentiments by my Aussie mates.

It is possible that some of the people that are asking about the casinos, may be thinking about the people that work there, and the cities whose main source of income is from tourism and casinos...
and what that might mean for those cities and counties.
Every person in NOLA who is being plucked from rooftops is being taken to the SuperDome. Fires are being reported in numerous locations.
Shep was just saying 9 inches THIS MORNING. But the water has been rising fast all day so who knows how many inches now? Water is up to everyone's waists at the Superdome or it was. The thing is, according to Shep, that the water is still rising. :-( So incredibly sad!!!

I don't understand why some folks here do not realize that this is not a functioning city any longer. There is no power, water, food, clothing, medical services or protection. The people cannot go any where and no one can get to them to provide aid.
What would you do if you were in this situation?

Yeah, but you need power to plug in and play. True, generator powered radio amateurs could provide some info, but the powers that be can definitely cut down on the amount of info that flows, and especially the pictures.

In the past many of these people just starved to death or died from exposure to the elements. Back in those good old days communication and transportation weren't fast enough to help. I guess we could just let that happen again.
Most of these people no longer HAVE neighbors. Have you seen the pictures? Eighty percent of the friggin' city is flooded!!!! Their neighbors are wiped out and in many cases so are their families.

I do not expect the state to take care of every aspect of people's lives in difficult times. Churches, volunteers, the Red Cross, family -- all pitch in. But I'll tell you what, if being a conservative means "the State" just sits by and lets people rot on the roadside or drown in their houses, I'll just go join DU.
I don't know if I can find it now, but I read a report that the Corps think it may be weeks or months before they can open the Mississppi River Channel into the Gulf. They keep dredges going full time in the delta to overcome sand bars and shoals anyway. This storm was capible of actually moving the river's channel and mouth.
