I read recently that when the Commission membership was first proposed by the Bush Administration, the Dems objected so strenuously to two of the independent nominees that the Administration caved and accepted the Dems proposal that they be removed and replaced by Gorelick and Ben-Veniste.

You make my point well. Always good to have a little data to back up the claims. Bush should have stood his ground right there and let the Dems sink or swim. Gorelick and Ben-Veniste had no place on that committee.

" Gorelick and Ben-Veniste had no place on that committee."

- I should tell you that I have not independently confirmed the claim as to how Gorelick and Ben-Veniste came to be on the Committee, only that the writer (internet source) seemed to have his facts well marshaled and gave the impression that he knew what he was talking about. Then again, the internet can sometimes be as reliable as the NYT when it comes to reporting facts. Caveat emptor!
