Well.. it was devastated and no longer used as an official Air Force Base, but it was rebuilt in much smaller scope, and now is Homestead Air Reserve Base, home of the 482nd Fighter Wing. I lived 10 mins. from there. I'm sure they're tasked to patrol the FL coast and would bet have participated in Iraqi Freedom. The politicos have been trying for years to turn it into a cargo airport and sort of free trade zone .. to replace the cargo function at MIA. Don't know what the status of that proposal is since I left 2 yrs. after Andrew.

Homestead Air Reserve Base

I currently live in Homestead. The bill to turn the air base into a cargo landing site for MIA is pretty much dead in the water now. 9-11 seems to have put an end to it. We not have daily F-16 flights out of the base and many more military stationed their.

When I first moved to Homestead we saw very few people in military uniform in town, since 9-11 we see many more from all branches of service.
