Maybe there really is some natural protection there that saves N'Awlins every time.
Tell that to the people floating in the street. Mandatory evacuations is what saved N'Awlins from unprecedented disaster.
I agree with you, all these models we saw about how NO can be flooded (the Atlantis type flooding we were hearing about in the runup to this) - they need reworking, because I think they make some assumptions which are very unlikely. it seems like to take out NO, the hurricane would have to be moving northwest, riding right up the mouth of the river into Ponchitrain.
I am begining to think that too.
But those outer pennisulas are gettting more eroded with each storm as the river rises. So they may not always be this lucky. But there many people who stayed with their businesses in the FR . Cant fault them, since the city has different sections and elevations. I thought kenner and meterie would be toast. Looks like kenner did get some flooding from the canals.
The levees should be improved to not shut off when the power goes out.
One final point. Fox had a slow old man who was explaining the sections and canals of the city, but noOOOOOOO!,
schung! they had to cut away for one of their stupid fox alerts, rather than letting us in on how the levee system REALLY works. ;(
