Who needs flood insurance?
By Insure.com

When your home is flooded, it can lead to financial ruin if you don't have the proper insurance. And note this: A basic homeowners policy won't cover your flood damage! You need flood insurance — a special policy backed by the federal government, with cooperation from local communities and private insurance companies.

About 200 insurance companies, possibly including the company that already handles your homeowners or auto insurance, write and service flood insurance policies for the government, which finances the program through premiums.

Although flood insurance is relatively inexpensive, most Americans neglect to purchase protection. Only about one-quarter of the homes in areas most vulnerable are insured against flood loss, according to the Federal Insurance Administration (FIA). In those areas, flooding is 26 times more likely to occur than a fire during the course of a typical 30-year mortgage.

From Reuters:

Shell said two of its oil drilling rigs under contract were adrift in the Gulf of Mexico. One rig is owned by Nobel, the other by Transocean Inc.

where are these examples of people without flood insurance, being paid off by the government? from my knowledge of it, all they do is provide low interest loans.

The type of aid varies depending upon the level of damage and type of disaster declaration. In the areas of most extensive damage, the assistance will be outright grants.

What is an oil rig, exactly? Is it a platform?

Low interest loans would be better. If you know you have to pay it back you will do everything you can to minimize damages.

FEMA provides both 'grants' and 'loans'. Grants are not repayable. Usually the 'grant' is to make things moderately habitable, or provide for temporary housing. Loans are for permanant repairs.

"I really thought GA would escape the wrath of Katrina. This thing must be massive to have arms in Georgia."

I didn't. I've been watching the same intell weather map since yesterday. The northern storm (swan)neck got pulled down into Katrina and formed a solid neck, building up Katrinas strength. Now what is happening is the hurricane is like a YoYo that will snap back upwards north, the neck acting like the YoYo string.

All is not well in Georgia. Rush hour is just starting and tornados being reported near I-20 and other major highways.

The Carrol County tornado look like they might be heading my way in Alpharetta.

The rain is really coming down here now.

Per New Orleans Mayor : 40000 homes flodded in ST. bernard parish. 400 people known to be on rooftops, numerous bodies seen floating. :-(

THis is the scenario we feared. This is just one area of New orleans. Nothing has been heard yet from Venice and the area near landfall. Also, no reports what so ever from Pass Christian/Bay St. Louis area.

THis is utterly heartbreaking, everyone please pray for these people, and prepare yourselves for a catastrophe of the likes not seen by this country in many many years. :-(
