Last summer while remodeling my house the construction worker stirred them up from somewhere.
Two of the guys got stung and both wound up in the hospital.
My neighbor about 5 houses down got stung this summer and the hospital told him he had about 2 minutes left to live before his heart swelled up so large that it would burst. He never had an allergy to bee stings before and has made a full recovery. He now carries around that injection needle that gives him a grace period of about 10 minutes to reach the hospital
We've been seeing some kind of yellow jacket / red wasp looking hybrid around here for the last several years.
These things are about 2 inches long and red with the stripe pattern of a yellow jacket. They do NOT have a typical sting of either one, but seem to have a more potent variety of poison.
When someone gets stung, it makes a huge welt that, over time, becomes a black spot, then a hole in the skin.
We make a poultice of moistened tobacco and ice to take away some of the painfulness of the sting.
Yellow jackets are wasps!
