(CNN) -- Conservative religious broadcaster Pat Robertson apologized Wednesday for calling for the assassination of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez during Monday's broadcast of his "700 Club" program.

"Is it right to call for assassination? No, and I apologize for that statement," he said in a written statement.

I wouldn't lose one night's sleep if something happened to the Communist Castro or Castro Jr. Chavez!

Why is he a dingbat?

Seems to me a good Cristian man ought not to be calling for someone's murder, no matter who it is.

Welcome to FR.

BTW, isn't Robertson the one who said Tinky Winky was the gay Teletubby because he was purple and had a purse? The man should stick to preachin', and perhaps then he would not have to apologize all the time.

Yes, this is clearly much better:

I didn't say 'assassination.' I said our special forces should 'take him out.' And 'take him out' can be a number of things, including kidnapping

Pat, you said what you meant. Be a man. Stick by it.

It might not have been a great idea to call for killing him. But Hugo Chavez is a serious threat to U.S. security and action in our defense may have to be done.

I'm still waiting for the same outrage from the media when StepOnAllOfUs, working in the Clinton administration, called for the assassination of Saddam.

Very very clever.

Was it right to have MADE A STATEMENT ABOUT ASSASSINATION? ("well of course, NO").

IS ASSASSINATION still an option? (no comment). Very clever. Clever indeed.

Robertson apologizes

*Shakes head in disgust* Great, this will do nothing but embolden Chavez and the Left even more. Robertson should have either stood by his statement or not made it in the first place.

Nor would most people. It's just when Robertson made his statement he should've stood behind it. He comes out looking like a loser when he waffles saying, I meant kidnap him and now he apologizes for the original statement. At least this should end the story.

Gene Scott never would have apologised! This country hasn't been the same since Sinatra and Dr. Scott have passed on.

Of course he has the right to say it, and Chavez would be most helpful if he was six feet under.

But that is not the point. Seems to me the argument is not whether he had the right to say it, but whether or not the head of the CBN should be saying it.
