The 1939 Academy Awards gave honors for the top movies of that year which included, "Gone With the Wind," "The Wizard of Oz," "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington" and "Stagecoach."

What's missing today in movies is quality.

I think 1939 is generally considered the finest year EVER for movie making. In addition to those classics you can also add:
